SARFT’s ban expands: set-top boxes can only use domestic TVOS 1.0

Shenzhen Aerospace Communication Antenna Manufacturer Antenna Knowledge. According to the "People's Posts and Telecommunications" report, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (hereinafter referred to as "SARFT") issued a notice recently, deciding to expand the pilot scope of the TVOS smart TV operating system among cable operators. This means that in the future, terminals such as OTT set-top boxes launched by cable operators can only install and use TVOS 1.0, and no other operating systems may be installed. It is understood that the TVOS TV operating system promoted this time is a smart TV operating system jointly developed by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television and some R&D units. TVOS 1.0 was officially released in early June last year. Subsequently, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television issued an order requiring the cable TV OTT box to be installed with the TVOS system. At that time, the first batch of pilots were conducted by two cable TV operators, Jiangsu Cable and Shanghai Dongfang Cable, respectively undertaking the pilot promotion tasks of 500,000 sets each. Now, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television has expanded the scope of the pilot program, requiring that terminals such as smart TV set-top boxes purchased or integrated, developed and installed by cable TV network companies must use TVOS 1.0, and at the same time need to follow the relevant technical specifications of the NGB next-generation radio and TV network. In addition, the TVOS 1.0 system has correspondingly added an information security module to strengthen the user's information security. In addition, TVOS 1.0 also takes into account the technologies of existing operating systems, such as Linux, Android, etc. As for which operating system is more suitable for smart TV, there has been no clear unity in the industry. Although 90% of smart TVs currently use Android, more and more TV manufacturers have begun to try other options. LG said it intends to install the Web OS system it acquired on 70 percent of its TVs. Samsung has also made plans, and the next smart TV will use the Tizen system developed by itself. Under the circumstance that the TV system market has not been completely stabilized, this regulation of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television is also for the consideration of seizing the market. However, some terminal TV companies said that TVOS 1.0 will control the applications on TVs after the full marketization, which may affect the development speed of smart TV applications.
